Danke für dieses historische Tondokument.

I used to listen to RBI's English service throughout the 1980's up until it closed, shortwave radio became less interesting after 1990

Does anyone know the name of the background sound that starts in 00:42?

@Proletarian1917 the lyrics to the hymn itself was never intended to incorporate communism idea. (although there is a line that reads"let's plough, let's build")
-
Quite a poignant moment to hear the emission end with "Auferstanden aus Ruinen" for the very last time, which, regardless of one's political ideology, will always be one of the most beautiful national hymns ever composed in my opinion. It deserves much better than to be forgotten.

@atzel62 There's no such thing as no unemployment, or free anything. Everything that is promised by a government to be "free" is subsidized either by slave or forced labor, or is provided by taxes. I don't belittle the people of the DDR for trying to survive under such a government, I belittle the government for oppressing it's people and country and preventing them from being free.
-
And even so, does the brief few months in which they were a "democracy" make up for all the horrible things they did to their people 40 years earlier?
-
@atzel62 The GDR never honored the people's choice to bring down the Berlin wall, they collapsed economically and made it look as if they were giving the people a choice, probably in hopes that west Germany would elect a DDR leader. All I can say is, for most of the 41 years that the DDR was around, it was not a democracy. Just because for a brief few months, they "voted" on reunification doesn't mean the government was at all a democracy.
-
@atzel62 Regardless of whatever election was held, Such a form of government would not honor any results and regardless of being able to vote, focus "all citizens have an equal say in the decisions that affect their lives." Which they did not. Because if they could vote on bringing down the Berlin Wall, they would have immediately.
-
@atzel62 Being able to come and go without border checks is not the definition of a democracy as you seem to think it is. The definition of a democracy is a form of government in which all citizens have an equal say in the decisions that affect their lives. And the GDR was definitely not a democracy.

Radio Berlin International, mein Sender.

@heimet
