Home Built Canoe - Highlights

This canoe is a Selway Fisher Guide 18 made using 5 sheets of 6mm exterior ply. The planks are stitched together with wire, then glued using epoxy resin.

It was a lot of fun to build.
At 18 foot i can get the family in plus a couple of friends, but can still carry and take it out on my own.

thanks. great boat for mucking about with the kids. 2nd season in and id still recommend it to anyone who can use a jig saw. My mate bought a very nice Old Town for over £1000!!! Mine cost a third of that and, genuinely, paddles just as well.

Did it take long to build?

I like the look of the S-F Waterman 16 for sailing, but this looks a little less complicated/lighter/etc. Thanks.

It took about 4 or 5 weekends and one solid week to build.

If youre taking the wife and one kid then 16 foot would be a good length and weight.

18 foot seems huge on the car and on the river. Im generally the aircraft carrier of the group. But I can lug it around myself with only a minor hernia and i can get 2 kids, wife and even a couple of other adults on board. Paddles like a dream. Id recommend Selway Fisher all the way.
