I tried this because I purchasing a new motherboard figuring I had noting to loose and it paid off.

I stripped everything I could from the board before putting it in. Preheated the oven to 385 deg. and just using the clock on the stove pulled it out after 10min. I am using it right now to post this.

If it decides to stop working again I will update this post.

I did try the "take it apart and put it back together" fix before I found out about the baking technique. If you send it to a repair shop what they typically do is re-flow the video chip and processor by heating them up, which I'm sure is safer than heating up the whole thing. For what this one was worth I was willing to take the risk of cooking it.

I just traded the laptop off, but I never had one problem with it after I did this. I also have baked a Lynksis wireless repeater and brought it back to life and have a 42" plasma T.V. that has a bad video board that I am going to try next. I'm not sure if it's the right recipe for everything but 385 deg. for 10 min. is 2 for 2 so far

I ordered a new board for my sister. DV6448se. I decided to bake the old board. SoB it worked. I'm still installing the new board tho. I used some foil and Artic Silver 5. I was to lazy to wait on getting the Artic Silver 5 from NewEgg, they have it at RadioShack.

Did you clean the CPU, Video chip and cooler and apply new Artic Silver? Are the cap lock and number lock flashing when the computer fails to start? My guess would be that you are not actually getting the solder hot enough to reflow. Maybe when you remove the and reinstall the motherboard you are causing the the still broken solder contacts to make temporary contact. Once you shut down the broken contacts cool and separate again. Try cooking a bit longer or a bit hotter. Good luck!!

if they don't i have enough i don't need to worry. 3 towers, a netbook, a laptop and the wife's laptop. love my tower though with the triple core and 6870. thanks though.. they should make them all with the cleaning plate. i'm just not a laptop guy personally. i RARELY take my netbook with me anywhere and i hate a whole tear down to do something simple and worse yet it's all on the board so if 1 thing goes...if it works for ya, more power to ya. i just dislike them for those reasons.

not all acers are made like that with the cleaning plate. my netbook and my wife's e725 (emachine made by acer) are not that way at all. if you clean the dust often, canned air should do the trick. i did have to take the e725 apart and remove a layer of crap that was hindering airflow. also got fresh compound so it was worth the whole disassembly. nice laptop. i know i wouldn't pack around a machine like that my self. is it more stationary? oh and my tower just has 2 thumb screw :P

it's funny but i have an old hp, pentium m era, next to me that works like a champ. the nvidia/ati gpus just run to hot. the foam rubbery crap they put between the gpus is the only problem. it just can' cool enough with that crappy cooler they come with. it might have been deliberate. idk.. they definately should correct this. i think there was a class action suite against hp or compaq at some point in time... i say buy them still but get intel gpus and keep the fan clean.

Worked as described. Revived an HP Pavilion DV7 1133cl using the oven bake method. I had a customer with a laptop that had a bad motherboard, but cosmetically it looked like new. He opted not to fix it due to cost. I responded by purchasing the laptop for 25 bucks. What the heck. If I could not revive the laptop at least I could part it out. I tried the oven bake method and the laptop is now working great.
