It's truly amazing that AMC managed to hold on as long as they did through the late '60's and 70's as the federal government, through burdensome regulation, gradually made being in the auto manufacture business too expensive for all but the Big 3 and SOME of the overseas marques.

@70Kenny not really sure about this comment. AMC had the financial wear-withal to be able to buy Kaiser Jeep. In the early 60's, they were the no. three brand of Auto, Ford, Chevy (Chevy Ford) and Rambler for in USA sales. They were strategically position for the gas embargo in 1973 with record profits. Their down fall was the Money wasted on the Wankle (then non Wankle) Pacer and the 74 Matador which didn't sell as well as intended. It wasn't Uncle Sam..it was bad management and Renault
