I thought I was going to die. My pages were torn and my cover was soiled. I lay in a puddle of mud, my once sleek white pages were blackened with dirt. I was covered in footprints. Some belonged to adults, but mostly the children. The same children I was read to every night. No. I haven't been read to anyone in a long time. Days. Weeks. Then I saw it. Out of the corner of my eye, I spied a white, fluffy beacon of hope. I found out later that the duck's name was Muffy. It had run away from home, fleeing from its sexually abusive father. And that's how it found me. It instinctually ran over and scooped me up, and carried me in its wings to a nearby alcove. It nursed me back to health, which, considering I had no organs or bones, wasn't very difficult at all. I explained how I came to be in this sad place. I spoke of my struggle with alcoholism, and how it lead to disdain among the library staff and the other books. I spoke of how, when it all became too much, I was abandoned, in a ditch. The hope was, I assume, that I would be carried off into a gutter and they would never have to deal with me again. Muffy and I had a lot in common. We were both discarded, misfits among our own. We would need to learn how to come to terms with our own problems. Hand in hand, we walked on to the nearest doorway. It was just beyond the street lights. I crossed first, then Muffy. Not a day goes by where I wish events hadn't transpired the way that they did. Out of no where, a car came tearing through the intersection. It narrowly avoided me, but the bumper hit Muffy square in the head. Muffy's skull was ripped off its body with a loud snap, and it ricocheted off walls before landing in a dark alley, where it was immediately torn apart by rabid dogs. My eyes returned to Muffy's beheaded body, lying on the road, blood spurting from its neck. It came out in blasts, and pooled around the cross walk. It was difficult to believe that such a small creature could contain so much blood. I fell down, and cried. It was all over.
OMG THIS IS THE BEST THING EVER!
