This tutorial will show you how to create a beam of light in your next video production. Could be rays of light coming in through a window, or a laser pointer on your gun and even a flashlight. It's simple and looks real cool!

  • Hello,

First thank you for your good tuts.

It's impossible for me to make such shots because I have a Canon 7D and when I record in low light situations I have a lot of Noise issues. I have a Canon 28 2.8 lens, if I get a lens with better aperture (1.8 or 1.4 ?) could this pb be solved ? Thanks for help.

  • @JeDorsBeaucoupTrop This tutorial was shot using the Canon 7D and an even worse lens... a Canon F3.5 zoom lens. So as you can see shooting this kind of a shot without noise is possible. Still just becuase you want you final shot to be dark doesnt mean u should use very little light. I in fact used a 1000watt tungsent light here, but I made the shot darker by shooting at the lowest ISO setting so the quality is good and also by adjusting my shutter and aperature so that the shot is underexposed

  • We use cigarette smoke when we shot in Galileo's home basement in Florence for PBS 400 Years of the Telescope to create a light shaft. Not healthy for anyone but it worked for an on-the-fly solution.

  • @InterstellarStudios :) Yup doesn´t sound too healthy but still a great solution to a cinematography problem!

  • hold on you told me 2-3 on the smoke machine then you kept saying it took you 3 takes= too much smoke. So a better idea is to use 1?

  • @FilghiProductions Yes, in this case 3 turned out too much... but really you won´t know it unless you try it on your location. Some places the air flow moves a lot faster so you need more smoke, and some places just a little smoke will do.

  • would this amount of smoke set off a smoke alarm?

  • wht program do u use

  • You should make a tutorial on how to do fast moving shots!

Like filming the driver from the outside of the car while its driving

  • Hey great video, but can you give a link to the website where you bought the red head light? (Assuming you bought it online)

  • another tip is to blow the fmoke into a fan

  • Ping Pong balls release tons of smoke upon burning. Im thinking of doing this for a dark shot. Do you reckon that's healthy/will it work?

  • Great video, man. Thanks! I'm embedding this on my blog..diyscifi.wordpress. :)

  • anyone else see the ghost at 5:55 ?

  • Great shot and great tutorial! What iso did you use. Where can I get these 1000 watt lamp and whats the price. Thx!

  • Awesome Tutorial! I am trying to do something similar but I have a problem with achieving that blue light effect using the same tungsten light. Each time I put something it either gives me low light quality or simply burn after minutes. What kind of a blue filter you are putting?
