Aarre Merikanto (1893-1958)

The ten pieces of 1930 come at the end of what could be called the composer's radical youthful period. These pieces are considerably sparser than his earlier sometimes expressionist works, though the title says pieces for orchestra in some pieces we have more the impression of listening to chamber music. The pieces cover a broad emotional spectrum from the ethereal Largo, the first piece, to the final dance movement which uses material found also in his opera Juha.

  • If ever I'll compose Merikanto will be my model. His language just feels very close to me. He has a keen sense of the colour and never ceases to weave the most interesting harmonic fabric. Largo misterioso (no. I) is among his most popular works and performed separately. And of course no. X too originate from his Partita composed a bit earlier.
