This clip contains Pierre Lacotte's revival of the famous "Pas de l'ombre" ("Shadow Dance") in which the Naiad Ondine becomes fascinated by her shadow in the moonlight - something she has never seen before.
The sensation caused by Carlotta Grisi's performance in the "Pas de l'ombre" in the original 1843 production of "Ondine, ou La Naïade" at Her Majesty's Theatre is one of the legendary events of the Romantic ballet. There are many famous lithographs of the great ballerina performing the pas. Cesare Pugni's music for the "Pas de l'ombre" was sold in piano reduction by the London music publisher Ollivier, and became very popular. His original music in heard here in its entirety.
