Here's the crowing sound our Barred Rock hen makes just about every day. Before she started laying eggs, we were worried she was a rooster. Now we just know she's making noise.
You should be able to let it mate with your hens at around 9 months, although some are earlier, and some take longer to mature. Keep him quiet by keeping him in a small, dark box overnight, so he can't tilt his head back and let all hell break loose, then you can let him out at a reasonable hour in the morning.
i have a cockerel, hes a light sussex 5 months old, can u tell me when he's goin to be able to mate and be fertile? and also, is it possible to STOP him crowing or reduce the crowing somehow? thanks.
Definitely an egg laying sound. :) My hens make it all of the time! Sometimes the rooster goes along and makes it as well.

That's the egg song! Fran sings it every now and then and sometimes my rooster joins in! :D
Every time I try getting a video of it, they stop whenever I get close. :(
