This short video is an extract from over 45 minutes of 8mm and Super 8 film taken in 1968 and 1969, by Mike Cover of Winchester, Indiana. His son, Gene Cover, had these old films first transferred to VHS videotape and than to a DVD that ended up at the Winchester Friends Meeting. This video represents an extract from the original collection. It is a great look at a different time in Winchester, once had a vibrant downtown.
Thanks for putting this online. We are lucky that this filmed has survived. I was born here in 1947. Most of my ancestors now rest in Fountain Park. I can still remember steam locomotives going through Winchester in the early '50s. My uncle Don Spear was one of Winchester's mailmen. Thanks again - Dr. Mike Copper

this looks to me to be one of the community 'sidewalk' sales i remember as a kid in winchester and union city. i was born in the '74.
if something like this would be shot today it would be at the local walmart where folks go and run into folks they know and strike up a conversation. it is still people, community and communication, but the sad part is that its at some big singular box store instead of the town square...

Interesting isn't it. About the only building that is the same is our 40 plus year old high school. It is truly sad that that type of mentality is why our downtown streets are dead instead of showing the life that exuded in our town back in 1968 & 1969.

It's great to revisit my childhood in a place that I visited often, and eventually went to school. It was even my hometown for awhile.
