The Revox A77 Reel-To-Reel Tape Recorder From 1969!

an amazing piece of equipment. the heads and pinchroller need replacement, they are used a whole lot, so they are kind of worn out. the record head doesnt work good anymore, so i used a tape recorded on the AKAI GX-4000D tape recorder.

  • Very nice machine! I'm thinking about replacing my stupid plastic Philips N7150 reel-to-reel with an A77. I'm currently observing Ebay prices.

Do you know if there's anything on the machine that tells you if the machine is 2 track or 4 track? Very nice that there's a way to get the VU meters to monitor the playback levels!

The speaker jacks are DIN jacks, and the German text on the back tells you in wich factory this machine was made.

  • @DrCassette the only way to tell if it is 2-track or 4-track is a little sticker on one of the heads or the pinchroller arm. sometimes (like on mine) the sticker isn't there, and you have to look at the heads themselves. the most easy way is to look at the erase head, if you see 2 small tracks, then it usuaylly is 4-track. if you see 2 larger tracks, that almost cover the whole tape-width, then you have a 2-tracker.

be careful, revox heads are very soft, so you very often find worn out heads!

  • @DrCassette....but otherwise its a very good idea to upgrade from your N7150...i have one too...i saw it on the dutch ebay "free to pick up" and it was near my place so i went and took it.

i have never seen a recorder built so badly....gear-driven reel tables? what the hell!

it does work, but does not sound all that good....and i don't think it will get any better.

the "lunch box recorders" like the N4422 i have, have belt-driven reel tables (3 motors) but have a metal chassis and sound good

  • Oh,and I have the same problem with the rewind. It's probably a 0,47 mfd capacitor that has blown. About the features, the NAB equalistion limits the frequency response to 15 khz as far as I know.

  • @oviwolf thanx for the info, i am thinking about replacing all the capacitors, as soon as i have proper replacements.

  • Nice MK1! I hope you can fully restore this machine, and trust me,it's worth it!

About the lamps, all are 24 V bulbs,so you can find replacements for them. Other than that, you should thread the tape over that guide on the left :-) Oh,and if you don't want another pinchroller, you can probably get the rubber redone,as I think you can find a place where they do this. It's a pity that the record head is worn... nyway,I enjoyed the video and the music!

  • @oviwolf thank you!

  • Great video! Thanks!

  • The Revox A77 is the best!!! :-)

  • The MKI is a nice one! :-) You can get the pinch roller without any problems at Ebay for about 50 Euro - sometimes cheaper... Just search for it!

The "Reel motors off" switch is indeed for cueing and cutting the tape. Take a look into my video. :-)
