This video describes the Friendship Donations Network program - a food rescue program that rescues 700,000 pounds of healthy nutritious food per year, and uses this rescued food to feed 2,200 hungry people per week. The food is FREE - there is no charge to individuals and/or food pantries.
The program operates out of Ithaca, NY and supports city and rural hunger programs and food pantries throughout Central New York.
The Food Donations Network is one of the most efficient hunger programs in New York State, due to low overhead costs (the only staff is a half-time director and a half-time volunteer coordinator), the generosity of local food stores (Wegmans, Tops, P&C, and many others) that donate healthy food that would otherwise be discarded; and most importantly a small army of volunteers that give their spare time to pick up food from stores and transport it to lfood pantries and hunger programs.
The recession is squeezing family budgets, and more families are turning to hunger programs. A $10 donation lets us give 70 pounds of healthy, nutritious food to these hungry families.
Please visit our website at www.friendshipdonations.org to learn about our programs and to donate on-line. Winter has arrived, and many families will need help once the holidays have passed.
Video interviews conducted by Friendship Donations Network Exec. Director Pat Dutt and Bruce McKee, video editing by Bruce McKee. This video is also running on PEGASYS Public Access TV, cable channel 13 in Tompkins County.
