Eastenders arrived in North America in early 1988 with eyes set on big ratings. Sadly they never materialized and many PBS stations (including WNED 17) were left holding the bag.
never mind america... we dont get enough of it here in the UK...one of the best shows on UK telly true to life gripping........shame about the lack of washing machines in london thouugh...
That has got to be the worst quality videotape I have ever seen! The colours are disgusting. I've 80s episodes of Enders broadcast recently and the tape quality isn't bad for the time, I hate to think what the Americans did to it to make it look that yellow...
Yes, but that may not be the case in the United States. On the whole, British programming generally has been more popular for one reason or another in Canada than it has been in the United States. British soaps especially are comparatively far more popular in Canada than in the U. S.
Actually, it was that very ordinary style of the show that always fascinated me, and it was why I started watching it back in the late 80's here in Toronto. It ran here for 13 years until they pulled the plug back in 2000. I missed the return of Dirty Den. That man was a legend.
Hear hear! I remember watching EE for the first time on WNYC back in 1988, an episode with Mary and Carmel - "I just want me Annie back!" They really should show the classic episodes again.
4. It is shown at a ridiculously late time. They should have shown it in primetime, at least in order to avoid the daytime soap operas, but still have a reasonable rating.

I don't think EastEnders would ever have had enjoyed the ratings in the U. S. that it did in the U. K., for many reasons:
1. EastEnders is a programme created to be enjoyed by a British subculture - unfortunately this subculture does not exist in the U. S.
2. It is focused on everyday and ordinary lives, unlike the more exaggerated, more dramatised, and more ESTABLISHED American soap operas.
3. It is shown on a station that is scheduled locally, meaning EastEnders would be shown locally...
