  • though the beaner is weaker, is it still suitable?

  • @petzltreeclimber

There are three issues that concern me using a biner. One, the cinching of the rope could pull the gate into the tree and put a lot of pressure on the gate. Two, the biner could get cross-loaded through the installation process. And three, there could be some bending forces on the biner or delta.

I have used biners; I am careful to check orientation of the gate in relation to the tree, so the gate of the biner is oriented outwardly from the tree.

  • sorry i meant to say on your anchor knot at the top of the branch

  • @petzltreeclimber

Ahhhh, I see now. The 'beaner' is a delta screwlink - stronger than a delta and is for two reasons: one, it keeps nylon (or polyester) from running on itself, and two you can unscrew the gate instead of having to untie and retie a knot at each setting.

I actually could probably untie and retie a running bowline as fast as unscrewing and rescrewing a screwgate, but I'd have nylon running on nylon in roughly the same place (the eye area) every time.

  • just wondering but why do u have a beaner on the the eye of your knot instead on just using the eye?

  • @petzltreeclimber

Hmmm, not quite sure what you mean. The only knot I have is the nylon foot loops and that is so I can disconnect them after I get in the tree canopy. I generally switch to arms only/body thrusting in the tree and the foot loops get in the way. So I have them on a connector so I can remove them - is that what you are referring to?
