  • I just wanted to say thank you so much for that description you gave about how to pronounce the Japanese R. I've seen all kinds of youtube clips, and that detailed explanation of where your tongue should be and everything was just what I needed for everything to click.

Btw, are you a native Japanese speaker or a overseas Japanese, b/c both your English and Japanese sound kannpeki to me!

  • @fuzzyhamsta123 Thanks!

Neither Japanese nor native English speaker I'm afraid, but I do appreciate the compliments. Thanks for watching. Tell your friends!

    Ta!

  • @mercofspeech

Wow... Do you mind if I ask what your native language is?

  • @fuzzyhamsta123 I'll give you a hint; I use umlaut. The other hints are in my Favorites. Cheers!

  • I would really appreciate a video like this for English speakers trying to learn the Japanese R. My Japanese pronunciation is good but the Japanese R is a little difficult to nail. It's not quite an R, not quite an L, not quite a D... very subtle.

  • To perfect it, try to lighten the pressure of your tongue, keeping the contact between tongue and palate light.

If you exert a lot of air while practicing, it might make you light-headed, but might also make the sound the clearest when practicing.

    Good luck!

  • I like the trick of finger touching method. Thank you very much!

  • @miamidade1985

    違いもないんです。発音は全く同じ。

    しかし、意味はスペルの違いによって違います。

  • 5:54のL、Rの違いが素晴らしく分かりやすい!

  • とてもわかり易く、素晴らしいと思います!

    舌を上げない言い易いLがどうしても出来ません。口の角から声を出す例えばreally等もし宜しければ教えて頂けないでしょうか。お願い致します☆

  • No time to make a vid, but it is done by pronouncing a western D lightly and with a curled tongue rather than flat. Try to bring in he tip of your tongue 1-2cm from your upper front teeth. Oppose to when pronouncing D, your tongue shouldn't rest on the backside of your upper front teeth, but rather be slightly curled and similar to the position when pronouncing RD, as in "curd".

    RDA, RDI, RDU, RDE, RDO.
