Gates use more water, time and effort. Besides, what a fabulous piece of engineering. I think I'll make a trip to bonnie Scotland to see it for myself.

if they did it that way, it would have been over 4 or 5 miles of gates, not realy a good idea.

it used to be a system of gates but it had about 21 of them stretching over 5 miles so the wheel expensive as it was was actually the cheaper method
