Good point. It angers me when people say things like, "we all really want the same thing." If that's the case, why do they also say "celebrate diversity" and "you need to be tolerant"? If it's all the same, there is no diversity and nothing to tolerate. Tell the truth about everyting all the time -- even how your wife's new dress looks. Then people can appreciate your praise as well. To say we're just the same can hide an opposing opinion we need to learn from or a threat we need to be aware of.
you're right. saying we're all alike (to Muslims or anyone else)isn't being respectful, but does actually belittle one's own differences and beliefs as well as the person we are saying it to. thanks for making me think in a new way about a phrase that's used so often to express tolerance.
One of the best ways to be a good witness of Christianity is to have respect for people's beliefs. They believe that we are as wrong as we believe they are. To claim that there is no difference between religions or belief systems is to rob people of the uniqueness of their culture, or their religion, or their beliefs. We can't "celebrate diversity" by glossing over the differences between cultures. We celebrate diversity by admitting that we are indeed diverse, and that it's all in God's hands.
Great insight about interactions with Muslims, but also applies to everyone. We all want respect, and telling each other the truth is important to establishing that. Without truth and honesty, what kind of firm basis is there for any relationship?
