What are Basidiospores? Sounds like something from the "Invasion of the Body Snatchers", doesn't it? Well don't get too excited, it's nothing that alien. Basidiospores are spores that are produced from basidiomycete fungi. Now these spores are produced from a small, specialized club-shaped structure called a basidium. The basidium typically bears four basidiospores at the tips of minute projections. A typical mushroom produces billions of basidiospores. In some people exposure to basidiospores can cause hay fever, asthma, and mushroom culture hypersensitivity. As far as human risk is concerned, some reports have shown this to be the cause of opportunistic infections. Poisoning is usually attributed to the ingestion of mushrooms that produce the certain toxins. Dry rot, wood rot and brown rot are all teh result of basidiospores producing fungi.
