Horizontal nystagmus is a rhythmic oscillation of the eyes characterized by a slow horizontal drift followed by a fast correction back. It occurs when looking straight ahead (the primary position), typically increases with lateral gaze in the direction of the fast phase and decreases with lateral gaze in the direction of the slow phase. Pure, or nearly pure, horizontal nystagmus is most commonly caused by vestibular neuritis although it may also be caused by lesions in the cerebellum.
