Sambo is the last trekking elephant in the city of Phnom Penh. She spends her days at Wat Phnom, standing with a heavy trekking chair strapped to her back. For USD 15 you can take a ride round the roundabout of busy traffic. This is not the life for an elephant. She is 51 years old and has spent her entire life working for humans, now it is time she is retired. Regardless of what he tells the public, her owner is a wealthy man and is using Sambo as a many making machine. Please DO NOT ride Sambo if you visit Cambodia or give money for her veterinary care as this money is NOT used to treat her swollen, infected feet. She wears shoes to protect the soles of her feet from the hot tarmac roads but this is only causing her more pain. She needs to feel the grass under her feet and live in the forest with other elephants.
Who's in charge of the animal welfare in Cambodia ? our four legged friend " Sambo " can sure use a Veterinary Technician.Do we have any animal doctors in Cambodia ? Sambo ! you hang in there sweetheart,we'll try to find you some help.
