I remember watching this final instalment of How in 1981. I'd stopped watching the show some years before as I'd outgrown it, but I tuned in specially for the end. It was very sad to see it go.

Yes, definitely 1981... the franchise allocations were sorted out at the end of 1980, as you say.

@darrowby1972 I think not Fern Britton, but Southern's last duty continuity girl; Verity Martindill!!

Made at the old TV studios at Northam, Southampton - now just a pile of rubble by the river. "Banjo head" Dineage is still going strong on Meridian Tonight, with his orange tan and khaki hair. Jack Hargreaves (inspiration for Bob Flemming) is probably looking down from above, gargling pipe tobacco mucus and picking his nose and flicking it at the gogglebox, bemoaning the state of modern TV.

@happylad65 Well it did return in 1990 as How 2 and ran until 2004 - that is the version I remember :)

@bertiedump Your'e joking, right? Also, it is spelled Encyclopedia.

So sad that such an informative programme like How is now no longer with us. I used to watch this as a kid.
-
You'd never get that many old people in a kids TV show now
-
I loved this as a kid happy times thay were

Voice over right at the end by the thinking mans "plumper" Fern Britton
-
Jack-dearly missed-much more than the affable countryman so beloved.

You wouldn't get all that staff to make a show these days, no such thing as unions closing down tv stations for weeks no more, surplus to requirements is no more! :o)
I doubt it. They only learned of their franchise loss on 28th December, 1980
