Informative Speech for Oral Communication Class COM 1010 02
October 22th, 2009
Body of the speech (transcript)
i.When we make an account, some websites may ask for personal information (telephone number, Social security Number, Bank Account number, fathers middle name) .Dont just provide those information, unless we know who we are providing the information to, why its being requested, and how it will be used. This information could be shared to third party, and there is always possibility for our information to be abused or misused by unexpected party. When we provide our credit card or other payment information, the information could be intercepted or be stolen by hackers. People are smart, smart to fool people who dont know how to be safe on the internet.
1.Use the most secure and up to date browser (How to Shop Online more Safely).
a.It does not really matter what browser we use, as long as it is secure and up-to date version. As I found in the article named Online Shopping: Be Safe and Be Smart, we need:
i.First, if we look at the top of our screen where the Web site address is displayed, you should see https://. The "s" that is displayed after "http" indicates that Web site is secure. Often, you do not see the "s" until you actually move to the order page on the Web site (Online Shopping: Be Safe & Smart).
ii.Another way to determine if a Web site is secure or not is to look for a closed padlock displayed at the bottom of your screen. If that lock is open, we should assume it is not a secure site (Online Shopping: Be Safe & Smart).
iii.We have to see the third symbol that indicates we are on a secure site. The symbol is an unbroken key (Online Shopping: Be Safe & Smart).
i.We need to be familiar with Seal-of-Approval such as TRUSTe (www.truste.org), Verisign (www.verisign.com), or BBBonline (www.bbbonline.org).-- Picture of each seal.
2.Pay the safest way and keep records (Info for Consumers).
a.Use Credit Cards.
i.Credit Cards are generally the best way because legal rights to dispute the charges if products or services misrepresented or undelivered. Some cards may provide additional warranty, return and/or purchase protection benefits.
Why not check or cash? Simple. Using check, cash, or money order is not the best way. If there is problem, money will be gone (no protection).
ii.After we do the payment, print the transaction and keep it as our record.
3.Protect computer with Antivirus or antispyware (Nine Tips to Shop Safely Online)
a.We have to install Antivirus and firewall to protect our computer. For example, Norton Antivirus (as one of the best antivirus so far based on PC Magazine). It has features that guarantee 24/7 protection. Norton AntiVirus detects threats in instant messenger attachments as well as in email messages, Internet downloads, identity theft, and other files. So, Norton is like the armor for your PC.
If any of us has been a victim, what should we do next?
1. Dont panic. We need to work the problem out directly with the seller, buyer or site operator by:
a.Sending them emails,
b.Sending them letters via mail, and
c.Calling them via phone.
2.We need to contact our bank or credit card agencies to get further assistance. They could protect our money from hackers/scammers. The agent or bank officer could block or freeze our account at the moment so scammers cannot do further crime. Thats what happened to my account.
3.We should file a complaint with (Online Shopping):
a.The attorney general's office in our state. Handle criminal appeals and serious state-wide criminal prosecutions; intervene in public utility rate cases; and enforce the provisions of charitable trusts.
i.Visit http://www.naag.org/attorneys_general.php
b.The Better Business Bureau. BBB's goal is to successfully resolve complaints involving buyers and sellers in a fair and timely fashion. This includes complaints involving consumer-to-business and business-to-business transactions that involve the advertisement and/or sale of a product or service.
i.Visit https://odr.bbb.org/odrweb/public/getstarted.aspx
c.The FTC (Federal Trade Commission). The FTCs Bureau of Consumer Protection strives to protect consumers against unfair, deceptive, or fraudulent practices.
