Help delist the wolf

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) today announced that several petitions to remove Upper Great Lakes gray wolves from the federal Endangered Species List have been reviewed and found to have merit.

The service ruled that the petitions contained "substantial information indicating that delisting may be warranted" in Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin, a move that would turn wolf management over to those states and give them more latitude in controlling wolf populations.

Wolf management plans for all three states include the possibility of wolf hunting seasons.

The finding was in response to petitions submitted in spring 2010 by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, the Sportsmen's Alliance and Safari Club International with the National Rifle Association.

The petitioners argued that the recovery goals for gray wolves established by the USFWS have been met since 1999, and the current wolf population in Michigan and Wisconsin exceeds the recovery goal by more than 10 times. The USFWS had 90 days to respond to the petition.
