This is Madame de Tourvel's story. Meeting her destiny in the arms of the Vicomte de Valmont.

@missineichen Alan Rickman played Valmont in the stage version. I don't know why they didn't choose him for the film. He's better looking and has a superior sounding voice, plus everyone I've heard of who saw the play said he was brilliant in the part. Oh well, that's Hollywood for ya.

She fell ill after he had cruelly left her. When she found out that he died in a duel she couldn't handle it.
Basically she had died in a convict because psychical pressure -- sorrow, guilt, disappointment, love -- that caused her to fall ill.
