I remember the matched grip with Alex Connel. Created a bit of a stir among the traditionalists. I really liked his style and was seriously contemplating changing to the matched grip. Glad I didn't, back sticking just wouldn't be the same.

Re the three with matched grip.
I think this was the style favored by Alex Connell ( leading stroke in this clip ) and I thought it sounded great. I always believed that rolls sounded better and crisperwith this style.
I never once heard a bad intro rolls from Glasgow Police.
Thanks Alex for some great memories.
Thanks also to John Whally who had a superb pair of hands. He studied American dance band scores and taught me some stick exercises in the 105 BB in Govan ( many years ago ).

Ugghh.. I hadn't remembered how bass and tenors used to sound. Imagine what AD would say about where the sound is in 2008!

I think he'd rather liked the sound of the tenors & bass of today. Maybe not so much the snare but I think he would've really appreciated some of the amazing things that are being done with the mid section. I mean he was all for the idea of being able to use other percussion instruments in the pipe band idiom. Cymbals etc. I'd think he'd of really dug some of the stuff that Shotts does now. Just my 2 cents.
