We knew Gary when we lived just along the same street from 2001-03..he and Cindy made us feel soooo welcome and his cafe was a riot of colour on an otherwise ordinary street. His funky fanny (sandwich!) was to die for. We moved from Amsterdam to Dubai in 2003 and visited back there a year later. He was a funny yet deeply spiritual man and it was wonderful to just sit and chat with him and Cindy and sometimes Chris. God bless you Gary...you made our stay in Amsterdam a brighter and more fun.

Thank you for this update. Just to be sure, I take it that both of them have died. I used to visit A'dam regularly in the 80s but have not been there since 1987. Sad news indeed, but long ago happy memories. I just hope the Backstage Cafe can continue as the place it was - full of love and acceptance...
