  • The best way to learn something is to make it into a song. This even works with math. Supercalafrajalisticespialadocious has no silent letters, but this would be an easy thing to do. I think it would be easier with a song like the Star Spangled Banner to learn Mihaly's name.

  • Good point. I still remember the preamble to the Constitution from when I was a kid watching School House Rock.

  • You need to white balance your camera. Otherwise, brilliant...oh yeah, and very interesting.

  • Balance schmalance. What do you think I am? Some sort of brilliant cameraman like the guy who filmed the Sonny and Cher parody?

  • Ah. It's easier than it looks.

    "me-high chick-sent-me-high-ee"

Man, that's a lot of silent letters.

If you just capitalize the pronunced words:

    Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi=

    MIHAlY CsIKSzENTMIHAlYI=

    MIHAY CIKSENTMIHAYI

Ironically, his concept of "Flow" is a lot simpler than his name :-).

  • You and me both. But first you have to spell his name correctly to get the most Google results. Mihály Csíkszentmihályi will give you some, but Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi is better.

Some places have a confusing "IPA" pronuncation I can't understand, but when I find a good one, I'll get back to you.

  • You oughta try spelling it too... that's how I ended up here "Do you mean.. Csikzentmihalyi?" ... maybe - thought it had two z's...

  • LOL, that was terribly cute. I didn't even BEGIN to attempt to say his name here at Cornell until my Positive Psych professor who actually knew him pronounced it as "Me-High Cheek-Sent-Me-High." I still feel self-conscious pronouncing it. LOL.

  • Thank you! I just did a search for his name, just to figure out how to pronounce it. I've learned it before, but forgot. His work is important so I want to mention it to my students :)

  • Your long term memory is good, then, if you can remember the Preamble to the Constitution. Did you learn it with music?

  • haha schmalance

i also dont get why this would be "brilliant."i dont know if thatswhat you were aiming for. its funny

  • ...actually I'm getting conflicting reports on the first name. Some say it's "me-high", others say "me-high-ee". Tomato tomahto.
