Iraqis Protest US Occupation

Thousands of followers of cleric Moqtada al-Sadr have marched through Baghdad in protest at a pact that would allow U.S. forces to stay in Iraq for three more years.

Though the atmosphere appeared mostly peaceful, demonstrators set fire to effigies of President Bush and US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

Iraqi authorities said the demonstration was authorised and security had been increased to protect the protesters, who were marching from Sadr's stronghold of Sadr City in the east of the capital to a nearby public square at a university.

they should be glad to be able to vote and protest. ha 10 years ago they would have been executed along the street. but really, who cares about this place?
