The Oklahoma Department of Public Safety quietly embarks on an Orwellian mass-surveillance program to catalog the habits of drivers.

Amassing permanent databases of citizens on the roads, Automatic License Plate Recognition (ALPR) is being justified as a way to identify uninsured motorists or stolen vehicles, yet the lack of laws governing its abuse could have a chilling effect on privacy and free speech.

Besides automated ticketing and revenue collection, Police have also used ALPR as intelligence-gathering tools to spy on groups ranging from gang members to journalists. In one case a policeman seeking revenge against a reporter was caught stalking using an ALPR database in Edmonton, in a police corruption scandal that eventually cost the chief his job.

  • Driving is a privilege, not a right.

  • being used to monitor vets with sensitive mos, sec clearances, etc. yes, they are.

  • I used to support surveillance, but imagine every CCTV camera as a police man in a watch tower with binoculars which is essentially what they are.

  • secure net....or skynet? If the company wasnt selling it the government wouldnt be buying it. It starts with the company, and then the greed is passed along. Then when government greed meets corperate greed...BOOM! Were all dead.

  • just read "1984" - it's all coming ,I mean it's all here

  • People, take a pill. There is no expectation of privacy in a public place, and these cameras don't "catalog driving habits", they simply take pictures of TAGS.

  • @ultima3210 sometimes the databases get screwed up and innocent people get tickets and have to make many trips to the clerk of court and the court on their own time to straighten it out.I know one person this has happened to with a red light camera, how many others? What happens when the database gets loaded with all the info from these? Wait till this happens to you.

  • @ultima3210 "This totally gets the car thieves and other terrorists such as gang members and illegal aliens."

and to track movements of whistleblowers, veterans, Dr. Paul followers and anyone else that believes in our Constitution or that jet fuel will NOT melt structural steel.

and to track 'enemies of corp' or even POTENTIAL threats to some connected CORPORATION as they do in Cal.

  • This is wonderful technology. This totally gets the car thieves and other terrorists such as gang members and illegal aliens.

  • AWESOME!!! CANT WAIT!! GET THEM UP NOW!!
