Jeanette Popp, a victim's mother, made a very personal plea Saturday to the candidates competing for the district attorney's office in Travis County. A group of activists, which included the mother of a murder victim, urged them to do their part to put an end to the death penalty.

Four candidates are vying for Travis DA.

They'll oversee justice in Travis County, and for some, justice means a moratorium on the death penalty.

Protesters converged outside the courthouse Saturday afternoon carrying signs that read "stop executions now" and others calling for a moratorium on executions.

It was a public plea to elicit a pledge from the next district attorney to promise not to seek the death penalty in capital cases for their first term in office.

Instead, they want more prisoners sentenced to life without the possibility of parole. A plan supported by Jeanette Popp, whose daughter was murdered in Austin 20 years ago. Two men were wrongfully convicted of that crime, until cops caught the real killer.

Running for DA are Gary Cobb, Rosemary Lehmberg, Mindy Montford, and Rick Reed. All four are Democrats, and all four currently work in the DA's office under Ronnie Earle, the retiring incumbent. That means this election will all but be decided in the Texas Democratic primary Mar. 4.

  • Dear fourteenKnuckels,

There is no Texas state law that requires the DA to seek the death penalty in any cases. The DA always has the choice to either seek death or not. If the DA does not seek death in a capital trial, then if the person is convicted of capital murder, they are automatically sentenced to life without parole.

  • Chris Ochoa falsely confessed to the rape & killing Of Nancy DePriest to the cops. Then went on to confess in court & accused his friend in graphic testimony, Of doing the same.

Then he walked around the prison for 10 yrs saying he did it, Ochoa is an ass that put HIMSELF in prison. b/c this punk screwed up his own life does not mean we should let other people get away with murder.

Next time you want to kill some1 go to Travis Co

By TX state law the DA has to seek death in some cases.
