What: Western Shoshone Spring Gathering
Where: Crescent Valley, Nevada
When: April 17 19, 2009
Why: A gathering to protect the land, the people, and future generations with special focus on Youth and Elders

The Western Shoshone Annual Spring Gathering will continue a long-held tradition for Shoshone people and allies to share stories, support cultural traditions, and this year protect their religious practice at Mt Tenabo. The gathering will be at the base of Mt. Tenabo juxtaposed against Barrick Gold Corporations Cortez Hills gold mining project.

Western Shoshone encourage people to come help take action, and to participate in activities during the gathering including: sunrise ceremonies, circle talks, speakers, films, youth activities, raffle, traditional foods, traditional singing, round dancing, sweats, and experience the outdoors by camping in the beautiful high desert. People will also witness the aggressive actions that Barrick is undertaking to make the area as unsuitable as possible for future religious practice by Shoshone people. Barrick is moving full throttle in preparation of excavating an enormous open pit. Currently, Barrick has the go ahead from the U.S. Government, but legal actions are still in progress.

The gathering will discuss the ongoing fight to stop the mining of Mt. Tenabo. According to the Western Shoshone and others, Barricks gold mining operation will cause Spiritual Genocide and cause permanent destruction of Western Shoshone cultural and spiritual practices because this area is a central site for their religious practices and creation stories. This area is visited for prayer ceremonies, gathering of sacred plants, fasting, and vision quests, among other religious practices, and is akin to a cathedral.
