Lachine residents and friends sing out a protest song to Montreal Westers to help them understand the dangers they are imposing on neighboring families.

The battle over a Devil's Hill street -- officially known as Broughton Road in Montreal West and as Des Érables in Lachine -- has raged for almost two decades. But on October 5, 2010, Montreal West erected a raised platform topped by bollards, cutting off emergency evacuation route for the hundreds of people living on the opposite side of the street in Lachine. SIM (Montreal's Fire Services) and the SVPM (Montreal police have publicly stated their opposition to the structure : it slows ambulance and fire services, endangers firefighters and their equipment and cuts off one of only two emergency evacuation routes for residents living near freight train lines. A 2002 independant study found no usual high traffic on the street and recommended against closing it off.

Lachine residents appeal to Montreal Westers to "Take the barricade down!"

Song composed by Pat Schmidt, ©2010

  • Wonderful video! I live just up from the barrier on Broughton and reject it, for the very reasons named in the video. (Do note that all MoWesters can't be lumped into the same stew). I didn't know about the safety issues, yet on the basis alone of segregating people based on the property taxes they can afford, the barrier is an abomination.

The other traffic diversions are helpful in preventing residential neighbourhoods -- ours and Lachine's -- from becoming a thoroughfare.

  • not only is it selfish to exclude others from accessing your neighbourhood but by diverting traffic elsewhere you make high density areas even busier. take down the wall and fences in montreal.

  • this is so stupid....

    beny masella is a god

  • @cpt1chris waaaaaaaaaaaa the french person is crying about segregation

cry me a river you moron.

  • They bring walls down accross the world and we built them??? Can you hear the division bell?

  • @rockysmycat I'm not sure there are a whole lot who do oppose it. I hope I'm wrong. I can only guess that many are at best indifferent, even if they sense it divides. This barrier nonsense seems to have become part of the MoWest identity, taking on a life of its own. It both feeds and is fed by some notion of superiority and exclusivity (we are apparently superior to NDG also, I hear). The wonderful irony is that the more this small-mindedness is paraded, the more MoWest belittles itself.

  • @rocketship137rtx Thank you for your comment, i wish more Montreal West residents that oppose this barricade would speak up like yourself and I'm sure there are many more of you! Sorry for generalizing but the only comments coming from Mowest till now are negative ones, poking fun at us, belittling us. At least now the general public will see that not all Mowest residents believe that the barricade is the only solution.

  • @Justheretoseefornow

There are lawyers, not humans...I recalled previous mayor of MOWEST was blaming Montreal for Parmalat extension on St-Jacques as argument that Montreal always get his way. Federals and Quebec should take all infrastructures grants away

  • This is a perfect example of how the rich have the power to make things possible in order to enhance their way of living away from the average person! I live in N.D.G. and between Montreal West and Westmount, these residents are heartless, selfish and ruthless. They appear to think they are better than thou! In the end, my friends of Montreal West and Westmount, when we die, we take nothing with us, the barricades stay behind but your actions will live forever.

    Do the right thing...be human!
