Enable 480p and use the arrow icon! "Wernher von Braun" is now REPUBLISHED for the third time to celebrate a lot of video views for the first versions published to YouTube. Why? Well, to offer the song in (even) slightly better quality. Use HQ if possible and play back the video on a single YouTube page to get a bigger video window. The older versions will stay on the channel.

The song "Wernher von Braun", written well before 1964 -- and years before the landing on the Moon itself -- was recorded to Ampex video in Oslo, Norway, in 1967. The song was originally published on The Tom Lehrer Wisdom Channel in July of 2007 and was, in fact, the channel's first video. The original 4:3-version is still on YouTube, as is an experimental 16:9 converted version. But in reality you should use THIS version, which preserves the original 4:3 aspect ratio and is a great leap forward in terms of technical quality. Of course this version also includes Tom Lehrer's spoken intro.

To make this song even more spot on, Lehrer used eight bars from the well-known German national anthem "Das Lied der Deutschen" as a song intro :-)

Check out more about the German national anthem here:

In 2008 Lehrer really said "OK" to "The Tom Lehrer Wisdom Channel" on YouTube, as long as the performance is not altered and as long as it's free in the YouTube flash video format.

Click on the user name and visit the channel's front page. The channel is Lehrer only. And here is a link to the channel's support page:

  • how come he is so damn hot?

i would have let him do nasty things to me >:3

  • @uetzel, the answer is very simple: Tom Lehrer was -- and still is -- ahead of his time. He will remain hot for the next 250 years.

  • The colossal talent that is evident here is really daunting. Too many people

have bought into Lehrer's mock self deprecating remarks about his own

musicianship, but musicians know better. Classical pianists are torn

between gratitude that he did not elect to become a concert pianist, and

curiosity as to just what he might have done had he gone that route. He

certainly would not have been lost in the crowd.. I am in awe of this man.

  • @bozzelgreeb, you just wrote my favorite comment of all time. I sincerely hope that you click on my (rather stupid) unser name "6funswede" and enjoy songs like "The Vatican Rag" or "Poisoning Pigeons in the Park". Make sure to watch the 480p versions (read the channel/profile description and especially "previews"). Thank you soooo much!

  • It's satire. Satire is kind to nobody. People satirize Jesus and Gandhi, even. It doesn't mean they don't respect them, it just means they can recognize how their lives and accomplishments can hold some humor.

  • Me gusta.

  • Oh man Werner Von Braun was so far ahead of his time, if he was alive today he'd be prepped to make a fortune.

  • There should be an element named after this man! Lehrerium!

  • who is this idiot playing the piano with that smug look on his face??

  • @AntiChristAntiFail It was a joke, mate...

  • @CrapOfTheWorld Probably wasn't his choice, NASA missions are planned surgically and they probably, being noobs to space, thought having him in orbit in case of emergencies was a good idea. NASA itself is a genius collective, but even geniuses can be idiots, and most of them (for some reason) get jobs in positions that let them plan things for other people.

  • My parents had this record when I was a boy. I didn't understand the songs but sang with them and they stuck in my head. As the years went by and I grew, I slowly started to understand their meaning. Some 40 years later, I'm still listening and learning from them it seems.

  • @AntiChristAntiFail Michael Collins was though. Didn't even get out for a walk around. Pointless. Might as well have stayed at home.

  • Lehrer was a master of what he did, but I do have this ONE issue.

Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong were NOT idiots.

  • Und I'm learning CHINESE...as we all shall be.
