Metal guides can be bought and are the recommended replacement. I would drop the oil pan though and make sure there's no hard plastic circulating.

How many miles are on the clock? These engines have plastic timing chain guides and they break after so many miles without being replaced! Definitely sounds like your issue!

the alternator seems to be the cause. lot's of noise coming from it when turned by hand. The chain guides have been changed already. Thanks for the comments!
