Shady tree mechanic is puzzled. Is it maybe just a worn bearing in an idler pulley?

  • the alternator seems to be the cause. lot's of noise coming from it when turned by hand. The chain guides have been changed already. Thanks for the comments!

  • Metal guides can be bought and are the recommended replacement. I would drop the oil pan though and make sure there's no hard plastic circulating.

  • How many miles are on the clock? These engines have plastic timing chain guides and they break after so many miles without being replaced! Definitely sounds like your issue!
