English: The International is an upcoming American action-drama film directed by Tom Tykwer and starring Clive Owen and Naomi Watts. The film follows a pair that investigates corruption within a banking institution. Production began in Berlin in September 2007. The International is slated to be released in North America on February 13, 2009.

Plot

Interpol Agent Louis Salinger (Clive Owen) and Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Eleanor Whitman (Naomi Watts) are determined to bring to justice one of the world's most powerful banks. Uncovering illegal activities including money laundering, arms trading, and the destabilization of governments, Salinger and Whitman's investigation takes them from Berlin to Milan to New York and to Istanbul. Finding themselves in a high-stakes chase across the globe, the bank will stop at nothing to stop them.

Production

The International is based on an original screenplay written by Eric Singer, with director Tom Tykwer helming the film. In April 2007, actor Clive Owen signed on to star in The International, The following July, actress Naomi Watts was cast opposite Owen. The film received US$5.4 million from the German Federal Film Fund toward its budget in August. The following month, its funding increased to $7.9 million based on the board's assessment that two-thirds of The International would be produced in Germany and that the film involved German talent like actors Armin Mueller-Stahl and Axel Milberg, cinematographer Frank Griebe, and production designer Uli Hanisch. Filming began in Berlin in September 10, 2007. Part of the production has taken place in Babelsberg Studios. A life-size replica of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum was built for a shoot-out scene.

Release

The International is scheduled to be released in the United States and Canada on February 13, 2009. It will also be released in the United Kingdom on February 27, 2009.

Interpol-Agent ermittelt in Banken-Korruptionsfall

Clive Owen ("Children of Men") übernimmt die Hauptrolle in Columbia Pictures Actionthriller "The International". Er spielt einen Interpol-Agenten, der Korruption bei mächtigen Banken aufdeckt. Regie führt Tom Tykwer ("Das Parfüm", "Lola rennt"), nach einem Drehbuch von Eric Singer. Der Genre-Spezialist John Woo ("Mission: Impossible II", "Paycheck") ist als Produzent dabei. Im September sollen die Dreharbeiten starten.
Owen (42) hat zuletzt ebenfalls einen Actionthriller abgedreht, mit dem vielsagenden Titel "Shoot Em Up". Die Geschichte beginnt mit einer Geburt im Kugelhagel, während einer Schießerei. Der unfreiwillige Geburtshelfer Mr. Smith (Owen) hat den Auftrag, das Neugeborene zu beschützen - warum, ist noch nicht bekannt. Paul Giamatti mimt den Oberschurken, Monica Bellucci ist als Mr. Smith' Flamme zu sehen.
In die Kinos kommt der Film voraussichtlich im Winter 2007.
Vor "International" ist der Brite noch mit "Sin City 2" beschäftigt, den Robert Rodriguez gemeinsam mit dem Schöpfer der Serie, Frank Miller, ab Juni in Texas inszeniert. Owen spielt wiederum Dwight McCarthy, dessen Beziehung zu der Prostituierten Gail (Rosario Dawson) im Sequel eine wichtige Rolle spielt.
