Recorded on July 26, 2008 using a Flip Video camcorder. Hi everyone! Well, here we have some action video of the Michigan Youth Challenge kids and drill instructors in our dining facility. The program is designed and run by the Michigan National Guard to gives "at risk" kids a second chance and put some hope and discipline in their lives. We served over 5,098 meals during this two week annual training. There many hot and exhuasting days cooking in the kitchen. I'm tired! Looking forward to catching up on videos and with dear friends. Thanks for watching! ~Darl

  • Well I'm a cycle 22 graduate and SGT Orr's neighbor and if you take the time to THINK that this is during pre-challeNGe or phase one, whichever they called it then (see how the whole platoon's boots aren't bloused) so it's before you can expect the standards to be completely fulfilled. So stop talking down about the academy and take the time to figure out what your talking about first.

  • @breadmenv I appreciate the added perspective. No disrespect was intended on my part. The academy is a great program and the instructors are highly esteemed. Listen, I'm an old soldier. Check out an old movie called "Tribes" (1970) starring Jan Michael Vincent. The American military tradition and society is not what it used to be in my eyes. I'm just lamenting that fact alone in general and not putting down the academy, the students or the instructors specifically. My sincerest apology.

  • In Alaska it wasn't a place for "troubled or failing youth" it was simply a better place to learn and respect yourself. they used to go by that description but changed it when more than troubled youth started coming to the academy. it changed how people looked at the people that went there, made it less like a prison. it just frustrates me that they don't have high enough standards to do things how they were ment to be done and give people the idea that its only for teens that are in trouble.

  • @internaldebate Thank you for your insightful comments! I see the same here in the National Guard itself. We are getting a lot more convicts and recruits with low standards of morality and ethics. It used to be people were more motivated to join out of a sense of duty and patriotism. Boot camp wasn't coed in my day. I've see a lot of lowering of standards and compromise over the years. Our country ain't what it used to be.

  • dude.. this is some bull... at the ycp in minden, louisiana we would not have gotten by with that sloppy shit. Everything had to be done at the same time and same pace. It had to be uniform. You marched everywhere you went

  • I can't argue with your points. I know in the deep south they take their military traditions with a more serious mindset. You find many more schools there with rifle clubs and ROTCs, and that is a fact.
