  • It's adjoining the river, just before the one dam upstream of the dam that's across the street from Durham Art Gallery, and the cave entrance is on the same side as Durham Art Gallery is.

  • I'm really curious about the mechanism inside this that actually generates the sound. Can anybody shed some light on this?

  • Search "hydraulophone" on Google, etc.. (YouTube seems to prevent posting a specific URL). If you're at ICMC, drop by our concert this Tues. night (Aug 28th), and we'll show you some demonstration models after our concert.

  • I would LOVE to come see one in person. Unfortunately, I do not live in Canada. Does the hydraulophone in this video use some sort of fipple mechanism to generate the sound? Reeds perhaps? Is there any amplification? Is there an outlet? I just can't seem to make any sense of it. I'm sure it's simpler than I think.

    Thanks

  • Sometimes I use a guitar amplifier to amplify the acoustically generated sounds from the water. You can find more about hydraulophone in Wikipedia, and yes there are reed-based hydraulophones as well as reedless (the reedless ones are called "waterflutes").

  • You sir, have my respect. Now I'm going to pee and meanwhile try to make some sounds. You will be hearing of me.

  • My favorite national anthem, played on a haunting hydraulophone. I always think those things sound like the old 8-bit bit Nintendo.

  • what a practic instrument....

  • Hey, I know this song!

  • @hydraulist - that's McGowan Falls, or "the upper dam" as the locals call it in Durham. when Saugeen the river isn't dammed in summer, the natural waterfall shoots water straight into that cave. there used to be millwheels in there. in summer the dam gets installed and the water takes a different course away from the cave.

  • Great sound. Reminds me of Link's ocarina!

  • The Tikva!

Play the Water-Organ in a land thirsty for water.

    Geshem Bo!

  • why Hatikwa ?
