In the dark days of the Napoleonic War, Horatio Hornblower and the crew of the Indefatigable are put on half rations. But Hornblower is distracted from his hunger by the prospect of a commission, for Captain Pellew has nominated the young sailor for the lieutenants exams.

The Indefatigable soon sails to the African Coast to buy provisions. While ashore, Hornblower and his men are exposed to the Black Plague. Hornblower proposes that they serve their three-week quarantine by sailing another ship back to Gibraltar to rendezvous with the fleet. The mission proves that the real test of a sailors worth comes at sea, not in the examination hall.

Starring Ioan Gruffud as Hornblower. Based on the novels by C.S. Forester. All rights reserved to A&E--I own nothing. Description taken from the back of the DVDs.

  • Ha ha. The best part is when Pellew says "Oui" then corrects himself and says "Si"

He's so clueless when it comes to languages.

  • @scottyrobot With good reason. Gene Roddenberry loved the Hornblower novels and was inspired by Hornblower to create "Star Trek."

  • i wish they continued making the movies...the books are amazing!!!!

  • @Firefox123455 It is :) Mr Gruffudd is from Wales and was raised with Welsh (Cymraeg) as his first language. You can actually find vids of him speaking Welsh here on YT. It sounds awesome :D

  • @Firefox123455 Like Astraea says, it's Yo-ann ;)

  • oui.....si. priceless

  • @chopinandliszt R.I.P YOUR MUM!

  • @Songsmirth Ioan Gruffudd is Welsh, and the name is pronounced Yo-ann Griff-ith (Welsh version of "John"). He actually had a bit part in "Titanic", and the "Poldark" series. He was also in a BBC version of "Great Expectations".

  • Could anyone translate what he says to the Spanish officer?

  • I wish they made more of movies. HornBlower is one of the best series i have ever watched.

  • @scottyrobot yeah, actually captain kirk was said to be slightly based off of Horatio

  • @scottielise Pellew isn't big on politics and what's politically correct. . bless him. He's a man's man and honest to the core. But he tries because he know that some politics are necessary. And Horatio gets him. Pellew is different in that he cares for his men not treating them like morons. I've studied many, many wars and in each of them God is always on their sides. Whatever side that is. One crusade the men from Eng came to a town. Found out all were Christian. Killed everyone anyway.
