Everyone knows the story of Joan. She was a simple peasant girl from Domrémy in Lorraine until she heard voices during the Hundred Years' War (1337-1453) that told her to help drive out the English and bring the Dauphin to Reims to be crowned. So she prayed a lot, donned a man's armor at the age of 17, and led French troops to a number of victories before she was captured by the English in 1430, tried for heresy before an ecclesiastical court, and burned at the stake. She was only nineteen years old when she died. Almost 500 years later, Joan surfaced again on World War I propaganda posters, still working to save France. She was canonized in 1920. For music we have a piece called "Joan of Arc," by Leonard Cohen.

  • Yep, but she was beatified in 1909. Hmmm, that's still a very long wait.

  • nice vid for her...took a long time for her canonization. :-)
