  • Was that a chainsaw on the top of the spare wheel? Haha that clever, just whip it out if some trees are in your way:)

  • @Offroadersdotcom

Would an acceptable way to check be block the front wheels, turn off the parking brake, put it in 4h/l, then put tranny in gear. Then jack up the back by the differential and try to spin one of the wheels? If it is a locker, it won't move, and if it isn't, the opposite wheel will spin in the opposite direction.

If it is not a locker, in terms of traction on snow, would it be better to get a front locker, rear locker, or both?

  • @christopher12344321 I doubt you have stock lockers in a 2002 Wrangler. The Wrangler Rubicon was the first wrangler to come from factory with lockers and that was introduced in 2003. But in case I'm wrong about that, aftermarket would have little benefit over a stock electric or air actuated locker.

  • @Offroadersdotcom

I understand the concept behind the lockers, but what advantage do they have over stock? It was my interpretation of the manual that the jeep already had lockers on it. If this is the case, why get an after market locker?

  • @christopher12344321 A locker in an axle's differential "locks" those two wheels together into one solid axle. Without a locker, if one of the two wheels spin, all the torque going to that differential is transferred to that spinning wheel and you loose traction. With a locker both wheels get equal traction so even if you lift a wheel of the ground, the other moves you along. A center differential locker locks the front axle to the rear axle so torque is distributed equally front axle to rear.

  • First off, nice jeep.

But I have a question: I have an '02 wrangler, and I am wondering what the lockers do - rather what advantage they have. If I am understanding the manual right, 4l, or 4h locks front, rear, and center differentials. If this is the case, then why is there a need for lockers?

I am utterly confused and am hoping you can help.
