Politics. They did the same thing to her in Atlanta when she'd gone into the competition as the dominant figure in the sport--perhaps of all time. She won almost everything between '92 and '96 including three World titles and 2 European titles. She was the co-world champ with Serebrianskaya going into '96 and yet the Ukrainian won the outright gold because of favoritism, just like Timoshenko did.

Petrova scored 4 perfect 10s and a few months later in barcelona the judes decided that she wasn't even near that good and awarded her 9.5 or 9.6s and a 5 th place overall which was at least criminal...
