The passenger compartment is very stiff for such an old design.

The only thing they should really have improved was the steering column. A "sliding" column wouln't hit the driver (consists of 2 parts that slide into eachother). In That case, an airbag is very usefull. Here, it's useless.

Nevertheless, this is basically a design from the early 70's. Try crashing a VW Passat or a Ford Taunus from those days, the front passenger compartment totally collapses.
