  • Brilliant. Your wiring is so clean! This is exactly what I want to do with my player (it looks just like yours too). I saw in the comments that you used a Gemhut MIDI Decoder 128. If you're willing, please share any tips or other information that might help me duplicate what you've done. Nice MIDI selection, too! Thank you.

  • Hi cbkidder

    Thank you.

Details to follow via personal message.

  • Hi did you make the player yourself and how did you do that I seen the solenoids company but i want to know how did you do it and what midi converter did you use and if i can use just any converter Im rebuilding a 4 ft 5 Baby grand and im adding a Midi strip to rechord from a butsted Roland EP-9 to the action to the grand piano but i want to add a player and synth module part so it can be a full band can you tell me Here is my email krisnicholson24@yahoo.com

  • Hi Kris, The machine is a player piano, built in the 1920's.

It plays from piano music rolls. I only added the electronic part to play from midi files.

Details to follow via personal message.

  • Do you have a part number for the solenoids you have used?

Any chance of a video showing the inside of the pianola? I am intending to do the same to my pianola and i'm interested to see where you have mounted the solenoids. Thanks...

  • Hello keltonturvey

I got the solenoids on eBay, and the seller still have some.

Search on eBay for the item 320579393393

I will send you a personal message with more details.

  • Hi keltonturvey,

You are right. All the notes are played at the same volume/velocity.

This is also true for the original player system. The music roll operated system has only on/off control of the notes. The more elaborated "reproducing pianos" have control of the volume and expression pedals encoded on the music roll

  • Am I right in thinking that the midi note velocity is not used. i.e. all the notes are the same volume?

  • Hi djvincesewer

The interface is the Gemhut MIDI Decoder 128

  • Did you use the UM0 Universal MIDI Interface to control the solenoids?
