Johnny Mercer is my favorite lyricist. He makes singing seem effortless because he was soooooo good.

What I think makes this song special is that it expresses an emotion, and an entire thought process behind it, which most guys probably feel at some time in their lives, that no other piece of music does. When you realize that "rodeo" is a metaphor for something else, this become all the more apparent. If there is a tragic quality lurking in the background, it's is because the realization expressed in the song comes too late. From what I've read, such was the case with Mercer himself.

I've listened to the others (including old "uncle" Bing Crosby's :) and nobody pulls this off anywhere nearly as well as this ensemble. Mercer's "cowboy" voice of course is the lynchpin of it all. I can hardly believe only 124 views. I know quite a bit about the entire history of music, going all the way back to the ancient Greeks (recent scholarship has made that possible). I've written some myself. I can tell you that this is one of the most wonderful songs of all time. YOU have taste!
Thank you very much for your nice comment !
