Mostly scared of injecting RF back into the supply, really. I'm v careful and I'd trust myself with an NST, so I should try that method. There is something comfortable about my primary power source being 12VDC though.
I hope to post some vids of my own HV experiments soon.

Ah, I see, thanks. Just today I was experimenting with driving a motorbike ig coil @ 12V with a 555 + 2SK899 MOSFET from a huge PSU. I was getting nice arcs and only about 400mA draw. But sadly the back EMF blew my cheapo underfiltered bench PSU :/
It's running nicely off an old ATX supply but from your results the dimmer switch mains circuit seems the way to go. Still a bit scared of that method though.

yes, it's built from 1 ignition coil that i obtained from a car garage, two 8uf capasitors and a dimmer switch. ^.^ I didnt have the money to buy a NST at the time so i had to improvise.
