Adventure Rider Forum - great site !! http://advrider.com/forums/

What camera comes up? Sjaak started with a Sony Handycam DCR-PC5E
In the spring of 2005 he added a Sony DSR-PD170 for its wide angle lens. We started Clymer YouTube with miniDV recorders also. They'll soon be bye bye in favor of SD systems.

Although the Clymer staff wasn't along for the ride, we did sponsor Sjaak Lucassen on his 5 year adventure to travel around the world on an unlikely motorcycle: a 2001 Yamaha R1. To make the motorcycle a serious adventure touring bike that could compete with well known motorcycles in the class including the BMW GS models and the Kawasaki KLR, the Yamaha R1 received extensive modifications including: r1 forum adapted and strengthened sub frame to attach the top and two side trunks: placed an aluminum box in the space below the tank for a spare chain; placed a small rack on the steering stem to store the GPS; Van Wylick strengthened the aluminum stay fairing on both sides with 3 mm thick aluminum plates; joined the mirror supports underneath the fairing screen with a thick strip of aluminum to prevent vibration from breaking them; installed modified (5 cm shorter) Laser exhaust pipe so the exhaust wont blow against the spare Metzeler tires; installed a Cyclelok alarm with trunk protection; installed a Hyperpro steering damper; use fully synthetic Putoline oil; installed K&N air filter; installed Osco chain oiler; installed Fuelstar between the fuel pipe so lower octane fuel can be used; placed a 12 volt adapter to charge the video camera and laptop batteries; installed an on/off switch between the supply of the right headlight to save current and still drive with one light on; installed a relay for the extra brake lights in the side trunks; and of course there was a Clymer shop service repair manual book (not a free download pdf) for all maintenance troubleshooting repair. Following in the tire tracks of such travel adventures as Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert Pirsig, Jupiters Travels: Four Years Around the World on a Triumph and Dreaming of Jupiter by Ted Simon, The Longest Ride: My Ten-Year 500,000 Mile Motorcycle Journey by Emilio Scotto, Two Wheels Through Terror: Diary of a South American Motorcycle Odyssey by Glen Heggstad, The Motorcycle Diaries by Che Guevara and Long Way Round: Chasing Shadows Across the World and Long Way Down: An Epic Journey by Motorcycle from Scotland to South Africa by Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman, Sjaak Lucassen set out on March 2001 and through Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, North America and South America passing through the Amazon, Congo, China, Thailand, Sturgis and the Black Hills and more, Sjaak set a great new example for extreme travel!

Sjaak's looking for sponsor/partners. Check out his website. Gear and equipments builders, tested and featured on a ride through the toughest possible environments? No big support crew like those Ewan and Charlie dudes....seriously.... :-))

I'm not doubting you did it all alone, but I'm just curious: who's filming you in the "moving" scenes, then? Did you rely on by-passers?

Great, I finally have shareable proof of the true ability of the R1. I often get ridiculed for climbing California's Saddleback Mountain along with many other off road venues. Yes downhill on dirt is slow , however a dirt bikes top speed on the freeway is too.
