"This study represents the finest tradition of activist scholarship, where academics partner with community groups to produce useful and actionable results. In normal research, the academics have the say on what topics to research, and what questions to ask. Then they go to the community to gather data. After that, they alone interpret the findings and come up with results and recommendations. This one is different. The questions came from the needs of the community. The research is done by division of labor. The findings, interpretations, conclusions and recommendations are done jointly as well. Today, they are presenting their findings to the public - in addition, theyre using the opportunity to have representatives from the community come and respond to the findings. This is truly a study done from the community and by the community."
