Here are some tips if you are going to try this at home.
1) Keep your iron turned to the low settings (low heat). My iron has a dial for controlling the heat and I keep it low when I do this trick
2)Make sure hair is completely dry (I had 2 day old wash-n-go when I did this)
3) Use the water bottle to spritz lightly at the end to add texture back to the heat treated parts of the hair. Be careful not to use too much water or it will just shrink back up
You can use this tip to elongate a dry second day wash-n-go for a big 'ole fro too
Be careful to not use a ton of heat if you decide to use this tip.

I don't think it is damaging at all. Even youtuber HariCrush mentions in her Chime's Natural Hair Journey video that she even relaxed her edges a few times throughout her natural hair journey. Abusing heat can be as bad as a relaxer, but i don't think you are abusing heat here. Abuse would be too high heat, too often, and using products that literally fry your hair before applying the hair iron.

Another thing you can do is use booby pins in the upper part of your bang to pin it down,& put the upper hair ontop &you'll get the same look.
