http://cazillo.com/articles/37-photography/98-photography-exposure-basics.html Ever wondered how your camera's exposure works? How to get the really shallow depth of field or stop a long jumper in mid flight? Read on! If you would like to improve your photography then you absolutely must know this, backwards, forwards and upside down. One day it should 'just click' and you get it, but until then watch this video a lot until you do.

Your camera does a great job of calculating the exposure with its built in light meter, BUT it has no idea what type of photograph you want to create. I mention in the video in my mind's eye I create photos in aperture priority, then transmit those settings to the camera. As you may know my primary subject matter is portraits and I prefer to have a shallow DOF (Depth of Field) and then set everything from there. ISO should be as low as possible, but not at the expense of a sharp image with a slow shutter speed. The magic number in shutter speeds is 1/60th of a second, which is usually fast enough to capture people standing still without any motion blur and will also keep camera shake to a minimum.

  • Do most pro photographers use auto and take note of recommended ISO, shutter speed, aperture and then make changes to them ? I have only just started out with my first dslr and I am in full manual literally guessing all my settings because I thought that pro photographers took one look at a place or venue and just knew in their mind what settings get the best exposure. Maybe thats just naive of me to think that, I dont know. Please tell me how most good pro photographers work it out. Thanks...

  • @SuperMangn I'll work on a video....ok?

  • greg, why did you stop making this kind of videos ? I am watching you since you were on FroKnows channel. You are way better dude, keep doing this, LR tuts, flash tuts, etc... More videos more money you can make from youtube

  • @ladduro uh, I didn't stop.

  • @gregorycazillo well, you kind of ... videos are rare, you mix firefighting and snow in nov inton this channel :) Havent seen an LR tut/tip in a while. anyway, keep up the good work as often as you can. I do have a day job, so I understand your situation

  • @ladduro I'm doing my best to post once a week, sorry if that isn't enough for you. I need to make a living like everyone else and prefer to put out quality vs a bunch of crap.

  • @blackholesun211 You mean the AF ON button? Its just personal preference. I prefer to have my thumb on the joystick so I can change focus points more rapidly.

  • @gregorycazillo cough: jared :cough

  • @GregoryCazillo Great news, thanks.

  • Very helpful for beginner or as a refresher for an old pro. One comment, though - watch the "ums" and "alrights" - it may turn people off. My suggestion - go to Toastmasters! You will be more conscious of, and thus eliminate, those vocal pauses that can be annoying. Great stuff, otherwise.

  • me and the wifey are both learning from you :) cheers bro and thanks for passing on knowledge.
