I guess there is a screen where you can Item Farm, too. But I mainly use that for health regardless

No, It wasn't this mode. The Special stage had it's own boss though, Fake Man, although he was just one of the Police Robots shown in the ending of MM9.

Smart item use? I beg to differ; If he were smart with his weapons he wouldn't use them at every single turn. You need to conserve energy; There aren't going to be many places in this mode where you can refill your bars.
